Víkingur is a merger of the clubs Gøtu Ítróttarfelag (GÍ) and Leirvíkar Ítróttarfelag (LÍF).
It was in early 2006 that people from both clubs started to think about merging the two clubs GÍ and LÍF. The two clubs have a long history of cooperation, which has often yielded good results. That cooperation was mainly in the youth teams. In recent years, the clubs have faced stricter demands both when it comes to the sport itself and the administration, and it has become more difficult to run a small club with high ambitions.
The clubs both felt that it was very important to be careful in the process and they agreed to use 2007 to prepare a possible merger.
In the summer of 2007 a committee of four people was formed, two from Gøta and two from Leirvík, to make a draft of the merger.
When the committee had finished its work, its findings were presented to the clubs and later to its members, who could comment on the plans and get answers to whatever questions they had. There was also a referendum on whether the clubs should merge or not and there was a majority in both clubs to go ahead with the plan to merge. A final draft was to be ready in January of 2008.
The first general meeting was in the clubhouse in Leirvík on January the 14th 2008. Around 180 members were present. The new articles for the club were passed and a committee was elected. The merged GÍ/LÍF was now a fact.
The new name of the club was revealed on February 4th 2008. There were18 different suggestions and the committee and members agreed that Víkingur was the best one.
In February it was also announced that the new kit colour was light blue jersey and socks and black shorts.
On 27th of February the new logo was revealed in a meeting in the community centre in Leirvík. There were several suggestions for a logo and the committee chose the one that now stands for VÍKINGUR.
Today, the club has 600 members.
